How Do You Dispose of an Old Mattress in Singapore?

A practical Singapore guide to Town Council, condo, private-estate, retailer and donation routes for removing an old mattress.

By Lullaflex EditorialPublished Updated
In short
  • HDB residents should check their Town Council's current bulky-item removal rules.
  • Condo residents should ask management; private-estate residents can contact their Public Waste Collector or a licensed collector.
  • Confirm item counts, dismantling, carrying, access, fees and collection timing before booking.
  • Donate only when a recipient accepts the exact mattress and transport is confirmed.
  • Coordinate removal with the replacement delivery and keep common areas clear.

How do you dispose of an old mattress in Singapore?

If you live in an HDB flat, contact your Town Council and follow its bulky-item removal rules. If you live in a condo or private apartment, ask the management office about the estate's collection arrangement. For a landed home or another private estate, contact the Public Waste Collector serving your area or engage a licensed waste collector.

Book the removal before the new mattress arrives. Confirm whether collection includes carrying from inside the home, dismantling the bed frame, lift or stair access, and both the mattress and frame. These details vary, so do not rely on a nationwide "free three items" rule.

The National Environment Agency states that HDB residents should contact their Town Council for bulky-item removal details. For private housing estates, NEA directs residents to the Public Waste Collector serving the estate or a licensed waste collector, with a separate fee for removal.

How HDB mattress disposal works

Town Council services differ. One council may accept a mattress and dismantled frame under its normal bulky-item arrangement, while another may set different item limits, dimensions, booking lead times or collection points.

Before booking, ask:

  1. Does the service accept a mattress of this size?
  2. Does a mattress and bed frame count as one item or separate items?
  3. Must the bed frame be dismantled first?
  4. Will workers collect from inside the flat or only from an agreed point?
  5. Where may you place the item without blocking the corridor?
  6. How many working days should you book ahead?
  7. Is there a fee for extra items or special handling?

Get the booking confirmation before moving anything into a common area. Do not copy another estate's quota from a forum post and assume it applies to yours.

Mattress disposal for condos and private apartments

Start with the management office. The building may have a bulky-waste holding area, approved collector, service lift booking process or restricted moving hours.

Check:

  • whether the mattress must be wrapped;
  • whether the service lift needs to be reserved;
  • which entrance or loading bay the collector may use;
  • whether a security deposit or moving form applies;
  • how long the item may remain in the approved holding area;
  • whether the management's collector charges by item, trip or load.

Do not leave the mattress beside a bin, lift lobby or driveway without written instructions from management.

Mattress removal from a landed home

NEA advises residents of private housing estates to contact the Public Waste Collector serving their estate for bulky-item removal. A separate fee applies. A licensed waste collector is another option.

When asking for a quote, give the mattress size, number of storeys, stair or lift access, parking restrictions, and whether a bed frame also needs removal. A low advertised price may cover collection at ground level but not carrying from an upper floor.

Use NEA's current waste-collection information to identify the appropriate route rather than hiring an unverified operator from a message board.

Will a mattress retailer remove the old mattress?

Some retailers offer haul-away with delivery, but it is not automatic. Ask before paying for the new mattress.

Confirm:

  • whether removal is included or chargeable;
  • whether the old mattress must be the same size as the new one;
  • whether a bed frame is included;
  • whether the frame must be dismantled;
  • whether stairs, long carries or restricted access cost more;
  • whether the old mattress must be dry, wrapped or free from pests;
  • what happens if the delivery team decides it cannot remove the item.

Put the agreement on the order confirmation. "Ask the delivery team on the day" is not a disposal plan.

The mattress buying mistakes guide explains why delivery, removal and return terms should be checked before purchase.

Can you donate an old mattress in Singapore?

Donation is possible only when a recipient or organisation confirms that it accepts the exact mattress. Used mattresses are harder to place than ordinary furniture because condition, hygiene, transport and storage matter.

Before offering one:

  1. Check that it is dry, clean and free from mould, pests, tears and strong odour.
  2. Photograph the mattress honestly, including stains or wear.
  3. State its exact size, age and collection location.
  4. Ask the recipient what condition it accepts.
  5. Confirm who pays for transport and who carries it.
  6. Keep a disposal booking as a backup until collection is confirmed.

Do not leave an unwanted mattress outside with a "free" sign. If nobody takes it, it becomes an obstruction and an unbooked waste item.

NEA maintains a list of donation, resale and repair channels for household items. Check each organisation's current acceptance rules directly because they can change.

Should you sell or list the mattress for free?

A free listing can work for a clean mattress in usable condition, but it can also create long message threads, missed appointments and last-minute transport problems.

Include:

  • the Singapore mattress size in centimetres;
  • floor and lift access;
  • whether the recipient needs to bring help;
  • a firm collection deadline;
  • honest photographs of the top, sides and underside;
  • any known sagging, stains, odour or damage.

If the mattress is sagging, mouldy, wet, pest-affected or no longer supportive, do not pass the problem to another household. Use an approved disposal route.

Coordinate disposal with the new mattress delivery

A mattress often needs to remain in use until the replacement arrives. Work backwards from the delivery slot.

Before ordering

  • Ask whether the retailer offers haul-away.
  • Measure lifts, stairs, corridors and doorways.
  • Check whether the old frame must go before the new mattress can enter.
  • Read the delivery rescheduling and failed-access charges.

Several days before delivery

  • Confirm the Town Council, management or collector booking.
  • Dismantle only what the booking instructions require.
  • Clear the route without blocking a fire escape or common corridor.
  • Protect walls, lifts and flooring where required.

On delivery day

  • Keep the old mattress in the agreed place until collection.
  • Check that removal is recorded if it was part of the retailer order.
  • Do not let the old mattress block the new mattress's route.

For large sizes, use the king mattress delivery guide to check lift, doorway and turning access.

What counts as one bulky item?

There is no single answer across every Town Council, estate and collector. A mattress, headboard, dismantled bed frame and storage drawers may be counted separately. Unusually large or built-in structures may fall outside a standard service.

Send a photograph and item list when booking. Ask the service to confirm the count in writing before the collection date.

Do not leave a mattress at the void deck or corridor

Common areas need to remain clear. An unbooked mattress can obstruct movement, create a fire-safety concern and leave estate workers with an item they were not scheduled to remove.

Use only the location and timing given by the Town Council, management office or collector. If the mattress is too heavy to move safely, pay for carrying rather than dragging it through the estate or asking one person to lift it alone.

Mattress disposal checklist

  • Decide whether the mattress is suitable for reuse or must be discarded.
  • Identify the route for HDB, condo or private housing.
  • Confirm mattress and bed-frame item counts.
  • Ask whether dismantling and carrying are included.
  • Provide the mattress size and access details.
  • Book before the replacement delivery date.
  • Keep corridors, lifts and fire routes clear.
  • Get donation acceptance or retailer haul-away in writing.
  • Keep a backup disposal route until collection is completed.

If you are unsure whether replacement is necessary, use the mattress replacement checklist before arranging removal.

Frequently asked questions

Can Town Council dispose of a mattress?

Town Councils handle bulky-item removal for HDB residents, but the booking method, item limit, collection point and accepted items vary. Contact your Town Council and describe the mattress and any bed-frame parts.

Can I leave an old mattress at the void deck?

Not without an agreed collection arrangement. Book first and place the mattress only where and when the Town Council or estate management instructs you.

Can I donate a used mattress in Singapore?

Only if the recipient or organisation confirms that it accepts the mattress in its current condition. It should be clean, dry and free from mould, pests and strong odour. Confirm transport before cancelling a disposal booking.

Will a mattress retailer remove my old mattress?

Some do, often with conditions or a fee. Ask before purchase whether removal includes the mattress size, bed frame, carrying, stairs and disposal on the same delivery visit.

How much does mattress disposal cost in Singapore?

The cost depends on your home type, estate arrangement, item count, carrying distance, stairs, dismantling and collector. HDB residents should check their Town Council first; private-estate residents should ask their Public Waste Collector or a licensed collector for a written quote.

Is a mattress recyclable in a blue recycling bin?

No. A mattress is a bulky household item and does not belong in a blue recycling bin. Use the disposal route for your home type or a confirmed reuse channel.
