Will a King Mattress Fit Through an HDB Lift and Doorway?

A measurement-first guide to getting a king mattress through an HDB lift, corridor and doorway, including boxed delivery, folding limits and eventual removal.

By Lullaflex EditorialPublished Updated
In short
  • Compare the exact delivery package with the lift door, lift interior, corridor turns and bedroom approach.
  • A boxed mattress may enter easily but must eventually leave at its expanded size.
  • Do not fold or sharply bend a mattress unless its manufacturer permits it.
  • Measure rigid frame and headboard packages separately from the mattress.
  • Send route measurements and photographs to the seller before paying.

A king mattress can fit through many HDB lifts and doorways, but the size label does not answer the delivery question. Measure the packaged product and the complete route: lift-door opening, lift interior, corridor turns, unit entrance, bedroom door and any fixed furniture.

A mattress delivered compressed in a box may enter easily and still be difficult to remove later at full size. A traditional or already expanded mattress may flex, but not every construction can be folded or bent safely. Get the seller's written handling instructions before ordering.

Quick answer

  • A common Singapore king mattress is about 183 cm x 190 cm, but exact products vary.
  • Ask for package length, width, height and weight. Do not rely on the expanded mattress dimensions alone.
  • Measure the narrowest opening and the space needed to turn before and after it.
  • Confirm whether the mattress may be flexed, and by how much, without damage or warranty problems.
  • Measure the bed frame and headboard packages separately. They may be less flexible than the mattress.
  • Plan how the expanded mattress will leave the flat when it is replaced.

Why lift-door width is only one measurement

A large object can sometimes pass through an opening diagonally, but it also needs room to approach, rotate and straighten. A lift door that looks wide enough can still lead into a shallow car or a corridor with a tight turn.

Record:

  1. Lift-door clear width and height when fully open.
  2. Lift interior width, depth and height.
  3. The distance opposite the lift door for turning.
  4. Corridor width and every corner on the route.
  5. Main-door clear width and height.
  6. Any gate, shoe cabinet, ceiling fitting or door closer that reduces clearance.
  7. Bedroom-door width and the turning space outside it.
  8. Stair access if the lift cannot be used.

Measure clear openings, not the outside of a door frame. Door leaves, handles, gates and closers can reduce usable space.

Package size versus expanded mattress size

Ask the seller which delivery form applies to the exact model.

Delivery formWhat reaches the buildingMain check
Compressed and boxedA rectangular carton smaller than the finished mattressPackage dimensions, weight and turning space
Rolled but not boxedA long cylindrical packageLength, diameter, lift depth and handling points
Flat and expandedThe full mattressOpenings, diagonal clearance and permitted flex

Do not assume that every foam mattress arrives in a box or that every spring mattress arrives flat. Delivery form can differ by model, size, stock route and seller.

The removal problem with a mattress in a box

Once opened, a compressed mattress expands to its working size. It normally cannot be returned to its original retail box without industrial equipment.

That creates a second route check. Before buying, ask:

  • Can the expanded mattress use the same lift and corridor?
  • May this model be flexed for removal?
  • Will the seller remove it at replacement time?
  • What happens if stair carrying is required?
  • Are there access surcharges or failed-delivery fees?

Can a king mattress be folded or bent?

There is no safe answer based only on “foam”, “spring” or “hybrid”. Construction details matter.

Some mattresses can tolerate gentle short-term flexing during delivery. Others contain border rods, dense perimeter structures, connected springs, rigid layers or adhesives that can be damaged by a sharp fold. Adjustable-base compatibility also does not mean a mattress can be folded in half for moving.

Use this order:

  1. Read the handling label and product manual.
  2. Ask the manufacturer or authorised seller in writing.
  3. Tell the delivery team about the narrow point before delivery day.
  4. Do not tie, fold or force the mattress beyond the stated instructions.

If the answer is unclear, treat the mattress as non-foldable when planning the route.

Check the frame and headboard separately

The mattress may be the easiest part of a king bed to deliver. A rigid headboard, platform panel, storage base or long side rail cannot usually bend around a corner.

For each package, ask for:

  • the number of cartons or pieces;
  • the longest and widest piece;
  • the heaviest piece;
  • whether assembly happens inside the bedroom;
  • whether the headboard arrives as one rigid panel;
  • how much space the installers need.

The bed-frame size guide covers external footprints, package access and storage-bed clearances. Use exact centimetres even when the frame and mattress both carry a king label.

A home measurement method

Draw the route

Sketch the route from unloading point to bedroom. Mark every door, turn, lift and low ceiling point.

Record three dimensions

Measure clear width, height and available turning depth at each constraint. A single width measurement is not enough.

Compare every package

Put the seller's package dimensions beside the route measurements. Include protective wrapping and carrying space. A package that matches an opening exactly leaves no practical handling allowance.

Send photos before delivery

Photograph the lift interior, corridor turns, entrance gate and bedroom approach. Send the measurements and photos to the seller and ask for confirmation before paying.

Keep the confirmation

Save the product dimensions, access discussion, delivery terms and any extra charges in writing.

If the route is too tight

Possible alternatives depend on the product and building:

  • choose a mattress delivered in a smaller package;
  • choose queen instead of king;
  • select a modular or split sleep system;
  • choose a frame that assembles inside the room;
  • use an authorised stair-carry service where building rules and safety permit;
  • remove a door leaf only with the property owner's approval and a competent installer.

Do not block common corridors, wedge lift doors open, overload a lift or dismantle building fixtures. Confirm access arrangements with the relevant building management or town council when needed.

Compare the actual room decision in the king mattress dimensions guide. The single, super single and queen size guide can help if a smaller size removes the delivery problem without compromising the room's purpose.

Delivery-day checklist

  • Clear the route before the team arrives.
  • Reserve the service lift if the building requires it.
  • Protect floors and corners as agreed with the delivery provider.
  • Keep children and pets away from the route.
  • Check the package label against the ordered model and size.
  • Inspect for obvious transit damage before opening.
  • Follow the unpacking and expansion instructions.
  • Keep the mattress label, receipt and delivery record.

Frequently asked questions

Can a king mattress fit in an HDB lift?

Often, but there is no single HDB-lift measurement or mattress package size that settles every case. Measure the actual lift door, interior and route, then compare them with the exact packaged product.

Can a king mattress be folded for delivery?

Only if the manufacturer permits it for that model. Some mattresses tolerate gentle flexing, while a sharp fold can damage internal components. Get written handling guidance rather than deciding from the material label.

Is a mattress in a box easier to deliver?

Usually, because its delivery package is smaller than the expanded mattress. You still need to check the carton dimensions, weight and turning space, and plan how the mattress will leave at full size.

Is a king bed frame harder to deliver than the mattress?

It can be. A rigid headboard, platform or storage-base panel may not bend at all. Ask for the dimensions of every frame package and confirm that assembly takes place inside the bedroom.

Should I measure the lift or ask the seller to do it?

Measure the route yourself and give the seller clear dimensions and photographs. Ask the seller to confirm whether its delivery team accepts the route. Keep that answer with the order record.

What if the mattress fits but the frame does not?

Choose a frame supplied in smaller components or assembled inside the room. Never assume matching mattress and frame size labels mean their delivery packages are similar.
